Yolo County Disability Voting Rights Week Declared by Yolo County Board of Supervisors
(Woodland, CA) - The Yolo County Board of Supervisors passed a Resolution on September 9, 2025, proclaiming September 8-12th as Disability Voting Rights Week.
“Accessibility is built into every part of our elections process, from how we set up Vote Centers, to how we provide technology-based solutions, to supporting voters one-on-one,” said Jesse Salinas, Yolo County Registrar of Voters. “Our goal is to ensure every voter can participate with dignity, independence, and trust.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 70 million people or 1 in 4 Americans, live with a disability. These may include mobility, vision, hearing, cognitive, self-care, or independent living challenges. Some disabilities are visible; many are not. In Yolo County, over 20,000 voting-age residents are estimated to have a disability.
Disability Voting Rights Week highlights accessible registration, voter education, and ensuring every voter has the tools to cast a ballot privately and independently. The Yolo County Elections Office reviews and enhances its services prior to every election by, among other efforts, conferring with the Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC) and applying recommendations from the committee's members, who draw on their lived and professional experiences.
The committee also is a forum for voicing concerns, suggesting remedies, and discussing specific laws and procedures related to voting that directly impact people with disabilities, such as implementing the Voter’s Choice Act, which provides “more days and more ways” to cast a ballot.
